Sweet Stouts are an English style developed in the early 1900s and historically known as “Milk” stouts. Legally this designation is no longer permitted in England but is acceptable elsewhere. The term “milk” is derived from the characteristic use of lactose, or milk sugar, as a sweetener in these beers. Milk stouts commonly feature caramel, coffee and chocolate flavours as well as very thick bodies to create syrupy beers with incredible depth and mouthfeel.
